DOJ “SECURE OUR SCHOOLS” GRANTS APPROVED FOR MISSISSIPPI

Cochran Notes COPS Awards to Natchez, Gulfport and Covington County

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three Mississippi communities have been selected to receive U.S. Department of Justice grants worth $202,580 to improve security at their public schools, according to U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.).

Cochran said the Justice Department’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) will provide the following FY2009 “Secure Our Schools” (SOS) grants to Mississippi:

  • Natchez Police Department – $88,863
  • Covington County Schools – $63,721
  • Gulfport Police Department – $49,996

“School districts and law enforcement agencies apply for Secure Our Schools grants to supplement their budgets in a manner that will allow them to improve security at public schools.  These grants are useful for purchasing school safety equipment and implementing programs to prevent delinquent or criminal activities,” said Cochran.

In all, the DOJ will be awarding 128 SOS grants worth $16 million in 38 states, including the three grants to Mississippi.  The grants are intended to support activities such as the placement of metal detectors, the administration of security assessments, personnel and student training and other security measures.
